What Are the QS World University Rankings?

Published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the rankings compare universities internationally through research, reputation, employability, international engagement, learning resources and sustainability indicators. QS uses institutional submissions, academic and employer surveys, and external research data. Each QS ranking product has its own methodology.

Relevant information and activities include:

  • Faculty and student records.
  • International faculty and student information.
  • Publications, citations and institutional affiliations.
  • International research collaborations.
  • Graduate employment and alumni information.
  • Academic and employer relationships.
  • Sustainability records and evidence.
  • Institutional profiles and public information.

Reliable reporting and sustained institutional performance form the foundation of effective preparation.

Which Institutions Can Be Considered?

QS distinguishes eligibility, inclusion in analysis and publication in the ranking. Eligibility does not automatically secure a published position.

Requirements address:

  • Degree provision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • At least two broad faculty areas.
  • At least two qualifying subjects within each relevant area.
  • Required graduating cohorts.
  • On-campus programme delivery.

Single-faculty and single-level institutions may need to consider other QS products under their respective requirements.

How to Prepare for QS World University Rankings: IIQA Step-by-Step Support

1. Eligibility and Ranking Pathway Review

Review degree provision, faculty and subject coverage, graduating cohorts, campus structure, research profile and regional/global participation. Identify matters requiring clarification with QS.

2. Gap Analysis and Readiness Planning

Review data, results and coordination. Identify missing records, classifications, research discrepancies, approvals, responsibilities, evidence and internal deadlines.

3. QS HUB Access and Submission Planning

Identify the authorised coordinator, review access requirements, organise cycle-specific information and check institutional identity and boundaries. The institution retains its account and makes official submissions through QS HUB.

4. Faculty and Student Data Collection

Work with HR, admissions, academic and international-office teams on faculty and student numbers, classifications, international records, reporting periods and applicable full-time-equivalent calculations. Check QS definitions before reusing domestic reporting categories.

5. Research and Bibliometric Review

Review publications, citations, affiliations, collaboration patterns, international co-authorship, disciplinary strengths and discrepancies. Focus on research quality, accurate attribution and productive collaboration. Local spreadsheets do not replace external-source analysis used by QS.

6. Academic and Employer Reputation Processes

Organise legitimate academic and employer networks. Review contact suitability, verified roles, consent records, prescribed formats, approved templates and deadlines. QS currently permits up to 400 contacts per reputation survey. Respondents make independent judgments; contact preparation follows QS neutrality requirements.

7. Internationalisation and Employment-Outcome Planning

Review international recruitment and support, student retention and experience, research collaborations, employment tracking, employer engagement and alumni records. Recommend measurable activities and maintained evidence.

8. Sustainability Preparation

Organise applicable policies, activities and evidence concerning environmental management, resource monitoring, teaching, research, inclusion, student support, governance and community engagement. Follow the relevant QS requirements and their relationship with the flagship ranking.

9. Training, Mock Review and Submission Readiness

Review reporting boundaries, classifications, consistency, research discrepancies, contacts, evidence, approvals and corrections. The mock review is internal preparation, not an official QS evaluation visit.

10. Results Review and Next-Cycle Improvement

Review overall and indicator scores, historical editions, peers, methodology changes, completed actions and updated priorities. Interpret movement alongside scores because rankings also depend on other institutions’ performance.
